Frederric Kelada spent his four years of Rutgers in constant movement: he was a teaching assistant for a physics class, a researcher in a neuroscience psychology laboratory and a volunteer for a Crisis-Answer team on campus. However, he was able to boost the first Bachelor Research Journal at the Rutgers to publish student papers from each academic discipline. The first two issues of the magazine were published this year.
"It seemed to be a huge Miss for Rutgers to be a great research school, and not to have a bachelor's research journal," says Kelada, a cell biology and neuroscience, which hopes to visit a medical school.
Kelada and his friend, Prachi Srivastava, a biology and psychology major, both worked in research labs in the summer after their Freshman year when they have decided that Rutgers needed an interdisciplinary bachelor research journal. Their first step was to contact the Aresty Research Center to provide assistance in providing the support of the Journal.
"They really had to start the wrestler of what it is to start a journal from the beginning to end as a bachelor student," says Tamiah Brevard-Rodriguez, director of the center, which facilitates students student research . But she added: "In a departure from the fate of many former attempts to build a research journal, the new journal is here to stay here."While many universities distinguish Bachelor research magazines, which distinguishes the Aresty-Rutgers-Bachter-Research Journal (RURJ) is that it uses a peer review program that is used by Student Moderators says Brevard-Rodriguez . Students who wanted to work on the journal met weekly during the autumn semester with the advanced bachelor coaches of Aresty, Guest Faculty members and professional staff to learn how to check research papers.
"Our review process is very extensive," says Kelada, a tribute student in the School of Arts and Sciences to Rutgers-New Brunswick. "There are many steps."
In the first round, four to six students check each paper individually and then in pairs and as a group they discussed changes they would recommend to the author. Then at least one graduate student and a faculty member read the paper and suggested further edits for the author to get involved. The final check phase sent each paper to a student copy editor.
The first issue of Rurj was published in recent December with six articles, from the effects of antidepressant treatment to mice on the impact of campus food and physical activity at the Rutgers Cookus Campus on the Rutgers Campus on the students' eating habits. The second issue of the magazine will be published in May.
During the preparations for the start of the magazine Kelada was considered a leader who could motivate the students to achieve their goal of achieving the first punctual topic, says Brevard-Rodriguez.
"When e-mails have been received and people meet personally, Fred was the driving force to make sure things are ready," says Brevard-Rodriguez. "He was the one who really lifted on all stairs and was sure that no one has lost the sight of what the goals stood. He was very stubborn."
Srivastava says that the journal proved to be a much larger project when she originally imagined. "When we got the idea for the first time, I thought it was just this site that we would run with a small group of students," she says. "Now there are hundreds of people who know about it and we have a mailing list of almost 600 people."
Kelada says that the recognition of the creation of the magazine has taught him several lessons, including why it is beneficial to include a diverse group of students in the project."Many, what Rurj is great, we had many ideas that came from many different types of people, which was great because we needed as many ideas as possible to contribute to the founding of the magazine."
When a team helps to make decisions and learn to trust members were also important to teach Kelada to delegate tasks to students who had skills in other areas. After graduating, Kelada, who lives in the Basking Ridge, continues to work as a rehabilitation technician in a physiotherapy practice before applying for the medical school. He also hopes to stay involved in the magazine next year.
"I did that so long and it was so much part of my life," he says. "When we look back on everything, we are so proud of ourselves and it's so amazing because we never thought That we would come here. "
