Structure of the Tok Essay

Introduction ( words)

makes it clear how to understand the topic and keywords (avoid dictionary definitions in the subtle way, not for example: the keywords are ...., the first means ...)

Contains a thesis statement - the main claim you make in your essay. It is usually the last thing you will write, and you could add it after you have written the entire essay

Sets the parameters of the attachment (which cover / cover / do not cover / in which context will act?)

could give a brief overview of your own opinion

could be s ya, why the question is interesting or important

should be refreshing and surprising!

The Technical Report of May 2016 indicates that, since the PT is expressly specified as knowledge issues, or the question of knowledge can be easily derived from the title because no central KQ is required in the initiation. As a rule, the essays that can improve an implicit KQ - their essay should focus on answering the KQ or attracting a request specified in the title - it is not necessary to explicitly bring it into the introduction.

Body strips ( words)

Body statements consist of several blocks:

Topic set - introduces the subject of the paragraph, says the focus of the analysis in this part; Ex. The science is considered extremely reliable due to the strict standards for the scientific method. The topic is usually an answer to a sub-kq (implicit).

a good topic set:

  • continues an idea
  • uses words from the title
  • should not be very general or vague
  • should not be too tight (so that it can not be discussed)
  • is short and clear

theme sets usually show:

  • the reasons for something (x is true because ...)
  • a detailed view of a relationship between two variables (to create a good topic sentence you need to restrict the general application: X influences y ... so ... What is it from X (adjective added to x) ? How (what's the influence?)? Which aspect of y?)

Theme sets also act as transition elements between the paragraphs. You may want to use a transitional language vocabulary (extension of the point or display contrast).

Explanation - After introducing your topic sentence, you have to explain it a bit more that shows the assumptions that led to this idea or work on the idea itself.

Evidence - The essay must be supported by adequate notes that will illustrate its claim. In Tok students, students should use real-life examples taken from their personal experience, another IB theme or research. However, the examples should not be revised. You should be briefly introduced and then analyzed with TOK concepts in relation to the application that you create.

Analysis - This part is the most important part of the entire body - it shows that you can critically examine and evaluate the claims and examples. It uses analytical language and Tok concepts. In the analysis, you must address the underlying assumptions (maybe they are covered?), Methodology restrictions, objectivity and reliability, applicability, omissions or exceptions, etc. You may also want to use 6 types of SOratic questions about further your analysis: 1. Questions about clarification: Why do you say that? How does this refers to our discussion?
2 Questions that feel the assumption: What could we assume instead? How can you check or reject this assumption?
3. Questions that feel the reasons and evidence: What would be an example? What is .... analyzed? What do you think because you happen? Why:?
4 questions about viewpoints and perspectives: What would be an alternative? What is another way to look at it? Would you explain why it is necessary or useful, and who benefits? Why is the best? What are the strengths and weaknesses of ...? How are ... and ... similar? What is a counter-argument for ...?
5 questions that examine the effects and consequences: Which generalizations can you do? What are the consequences of this assumption? What do you want to say? How does ... Impact ...? How is ... tie with what we have learned before?
6 questions about the question: What was the point of this question? Why do you think I asked this question? Which does ______________ mean? How can ... apply for everyday life? (University of Michigan)

Content-claim - You must think about your essay after a dialogue: one, the arguments that suggest other opposing and sleepy alternatives. After the introduction of the counterclaim, they must show how their original argument has influenced. You can either defose the counterclaim or create a concession that there is a certain truth in it.

Mini Conclusions - Linking the paragraph to the knowledge question, sums sales. After reading a topic and conclusions, the reader should have a general overview of the entire paragraph.

There are 2 approaches body sections:

1. Everything in a paragraph

Claim (topic set with explanation) (3-4 sentences)

Evidence (real-life example)

Analysis in the context of the claim

counterclaim with explanation (2-3 sentences)

Evidence (if available)

Conclusion ( analysis, discussion and implications)

2. Two separate paragraphs

C GLAIM (topic set) with short explanation (3-4 sentences)

Evidence (real-life example)

Analysis in the context of the claim

counterclaim with explanation (2-3 sentences)

Evidence (real-life example)

Conclusion ( analysis, discussion and implications)

This means that you can have 3 to 5 (or more) paragraphs. You may want to write about a knowledge area and write counterclothes, or maybe you compare and compress and compensate for knowledge areas you have selected. You may also want to add a separate paragraph that compares two knowledge areas of your choice, or discuss the effects (why is it important?) The consequences of it?) Your conclusions.

Conclusions ( words)

a new way of forming your important insights (not repeating what you have already said)

Final sentence: A good finishing set will leave a permanent positive impression on the examiner
